Introduced in the late 1950s, the Reference 5500 had an approximately 32-year production run through circa 1989. Over its long production period, the 5500 underwent numerous variations, including changes to case metals, movements, dials, and bracelets. The present example, dating to circa 1977, features a glossy black dial with crisp white printing, a domed crystal, and the Caliber 1520.
