An embroidered portrait bust of Charles I 19th century, after the 1641 engraving by Wenceslaus Hollar Worked in coloured silks and metal thread on a silk ground, the king shown bust-length, looking to sinister, with long hair, pointed beard and moustache, wearing a stiff falling collar and the Order of the Garter on a blue ribbon, within an oval laurel wreath and surrounded by a foliate monogram in the form of a large letter C, in a later mahogany frame. 31cm wide, 35cm high Footnotes: The embroidered portrait relates closely to the small group of 17th century silk and metal thread portrait miniatures of Charles I derived from Hollar's 1641 engraving of the king wearing the ribbon of the Order of the Garter. These works appear to have been produced in the decades following Charles I's execution, when images of the king became bound up with the royalist cult of the 'Martyr King'. The present example differs from the smaller cabinet-miniature format of the best-known examples in its larger scale and in the elaborate foliate monogram surround, but the sitter's long hair, pointed beard, falling collar and blue Garter ribbon place it firmly within the same Hollar-derived royalist portrait tradition.
