A good mid 17th century gilt brass and repoussé white metal mounted scarlet tortoiseshell veneered and polychrome decorated table cabinet Probably Franco-Flemish, the internal painted decoration including a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses after an etching by Antonio Tempesta, circa 1606 Of rectangular form with foliate gilt brass escutcheons, the upper section with hinged lid above an ogee moulded top, frieze drawer and a pair of panelled doors, the corners mounted with foliate gilt brass square tablet mounts with inset oval white metal repoussé male masks, the reverse ogee plinth with a moulded frieze drawer on gilt brass bun feet, the doors with inner painted paper figural scenic landscape decoration, the left hand panel depicting Thisbe standing over Pyramus plunging a dagger into her heart, the right hand panel depicting a hound drinking from a fountain, possibly also from Tempesta's etchings of Ovid's Metamorphoses, enclosing a central pair of inner panelled doors flanked by columns below a balustraded frieze drawer flanked by six graduated short drawers, the lower drawers with secret compartments, the inner doors similarly decorated with scenic landscapes opening to reveal a staged mirror panel inset inner well with chequerboard floor centred by a trompe l'oeil central painted paper panel depicting a view of a turreted chateau and flanked by two female term painted panels, together with two keys, 52.5cm high overall, 48.6cm wide, 33.6cm deep Footnotes: For the original etching of Thisbe and Pyramus from Ovid's Metamorphoses after the Italian engraver Antonio Tempesta, see the British Museum, Bartsch / Le Peintre graveur (XVII.151.669).
