An rare complete set of twenty two French faience glazed tarot card stove tiles Probably 19th century Each of rectangular form printed and painted with stylised figural colourful card images from the Tarot de Marseille, each depicting a different individual card from the Major Arcana sequence, within scalloped titled and numbered yellow borders, some restored, 23.5cm x 15cm approximately overall (22) Footnotes: Provenance John Burningham (English, 1936-2019), children's author and illustrator), ex collection. Vendor's collection since 1995. Whilst traditional French tiled stoves (poêles en faïence) typically favoured floral, mythological, or folk motifs, specialised decorative faience tile panels depicting cards from the Tarot de Marseille were occasionally custom made from the revival of interest in the occult, circa 1820-1850 and then onwards into the early 20th century.
