Pitman and printed by C Humllmandel, mounted within a later ebonised and gilt composition and wood glazed frame, the first, 86cm x 95cm overall, the second, 69cm x 85cm overall (2) Footnotes: The depiction of the Durham Ox in the offered lot is among the most celebrated images of prize livestock in British history. Portraits of prize cattle and other farm animals were popular subjects for nineteenth-century British prints. The ox became particularly renowned as an exemplary Shorthorn, a newly developed breed prized for its size and weight and bred for meat and tallow rather than as a working animal. Based on a painting, the print shows the brown-and-white bull standing in profile in a pasture, facing a man whose presence conveys its impressive bulk. The print was published by the travelling showman John Day, who purchased the ox in 1801 and exhibited it on tour throughout England and Scotland over the following five years. Beneath the title, the inscription includes Day's dedication to a Scottish lord, followed by a detailed list of the ox's measurements.
