Montague Dawson (British, 1890-1973) Rolling Home - The clipper ship Light Brigade signed 'MONTAGUE DAWSON' (lower left), indistinctly inscribed in pencil (along top stretcher) oil on canvas 51.1 x 77.2cm (20 1/8 x 30 3/8in). Footnotes: Provenance With Frost & Reed Ltd., London. Private collection, UK (purchased from the above), thence by descent. Anon sale, Gorringe's, Lewes, 27 March 2014, lot 1602. Private collection, UK (purchased from the above). Built at Medford, Massachusetts, in 1854 by James O. Curtis and designed by the eminent naval architect Samuel Hartt Pook, the Light Brigade was launched as the Ocean Telegraph for Reed, Wade & Co. A wooden full-rigged clipper of 1,244 tons, measuring 212.9 feet in length with a beam of 40.4 feet, she was acclaimed as one of the finest American clippers of her generation, combining exceptional speed with notably elegant lines. Following her acquisition by James Baines & Co.'s celebrated Black Ball Line in 1863, she was renamed Light Brigade and entered the Australia and New Zealand trade, carrying passengers, emigrants and cargo during the great age of colonial expansion. A familiar vessel on the routes to the Antipodes, she remained in service long after the heyday of the clipper era, later being converted to a barque before ending her career as a coal hulk at Gibraltar.
