Montague Dawson (British, 1890-1973) The New York Clipper Challenge in full sail signed 'MONTAGUE DAWSON' (lower left) and inscribed 'The New York Clipper The 'Challenge' 2006 Tons built in 1851 (on top stretcher) oil on canvas 51.1 x 76.2cm (20 1/8 x 30in). Footnotes: Provenance With The Walker Galleries Ltd., Harrogate. Built in New York in 1851 by the renowned shipbuilder William H. Webb, Challenge ranked among the most celebrated of the American extreme clippers. A three-masted wooden vessel of 2,006 tons, measuring 227 feet in length with a beam of 42 feet, she was the largest merchant ship in the world at the time of her launch. Designed for exceptional speed, her graceful proportions and powerful rig made her one of the finest expressions of American clipper-ship construction. Commissioned during the California Gold Rush, Challenge carried passengers and cargo around Cape Horn to San Francisco before entering the lucrative China tea trade. Her swift passages and notably elegant lines brought her international renown, and contemporary observers considered her among the most impressive sailing ships of her age.
