Monday Akhidue (Nigerian, born 1962) Dreaming Man signed and dated 'M.A AKHIDUE 2008' (lower left) carved wood 218 x 10 x 25cm. (85 13/16 x 3 15/16 x 9 13/16in.) Footnotes: A founding member of the Universal Studios of Art, Monday Akhidue is a Nigerian sculptor based in Lagos. Working primarily in wood, Akhidue is particularly noted for his engagement with the techniques and sculptural traditions of Benin. His elongated, pared-down figures reduce the human body to strong vertical forms, balancing the presence of traditional carving with an increasingly simplified treatment of the figure. Akhidue has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Resurgence at the Universal Studios of Art in 2006 and the Ambassadors' Nite exhibitions, including the 2008 edition held at the National Museum, Onikan, Lagos. His work was also featured in Ambassadors' Nite 2: Rare and Large, which brought together large-scale works by Nigerian artists.
