(including base) Footnotes: Born in Benin City into a family of woodcarvers, Smart Owie learned the techniques of carving from an early age before continuing his training in Lagos. He joined the Universal Studios of Art in 2004, working alongside established Nigerian sculptors, and graduated from Yaba College of Technology with a National Diploma in General Arts in 2008. Working primarily in wood, Owie is known for elongated, strongly vertical sculptures in which the natural grain and texture of the material remain integral to the figure.
