Mays remains widely regarded as one of the greatest baseball players of all time. Born on May 6, 1931, in Westfield, Alabama, he played 22 seasons in Major League Baseball, primarily for the New York and San Francisco Giants. Mays was an exceptional all-around talent, a dynamic hitter, outstanding fielder, and a base-running threat. He hit 660 home runs, earned 12 Gold Gloves and was a 24-time All-Star. Mays’ iconic over-the-shoulder catch in the 1954 World Series remains one of the most famous moments in baseball history. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979.
