A CLEAR PLASTIC PROTOTYPE MACINTOSH 'APOLLO' CLASSIC II. A Clear Plastic Prototype Macintosh 'Apollo' Classic II computer. Apple Computer, Inc.: Cupertino, CA and Singapore, ca. 1990. 260 x 245 x 340 mm (10 1/4 x 9 5/8 x 13 3/8 in). With property Pass carbon copies identifying it as an 'Apollo 2/40 Prototype,' Dated 8-30-91. In original shipping box labelled '2/40/C.' WITH: Apple Keyboard II Family Number M0487; Apple Desktop Bus Mouse Family Number G5431; Apple Computer Inc. Apple Microphone (1990), sealed in original cellophane. Released in October of 1991, the Macintosh Classic II, codenamed Apollo, was a compact home computing model typical of the standard Macintosh line. Although a desktop, it featured a built-in handle to the plastic casing, showing the emphasis on portability in computing throughout the late 80s and into the 90s (see lots 2 and 9). It was also sold as the Macintosh Performa 200 which came bundled with different software options. It was the last compact Macintosh to be released with a black and white display with the introduction of the Macintosh Color Classic in 1993. At the time of cataloguing, the device powered on and booted to its OS. Clear plastic prototype models were used by Apple during engineering and hardware tests of many of their projects. The clear casings allowed developers to examine the internal parts while the device was operating and without the need for disassembly. These clear plastic prototypes are quite desirable to Apple and computer collectors for the aesthetic value as well as their rarity. Included in this lot are carbon copies of an Apple Computer Inc. 'Property Pass' dated 8-30-91. The pass is a record of the transfer of the device from one building to an off-site location. It identifies the item as both company property and a protype and lists it as 'Apollo 2/40 prototype.' It offers a rare glimpse into the internal logistics of prototype development at Apple.
