Original shipping box, labeled 'MODEL NAME: PALADIN-1,EN.' RARE APPLE PALADIN 'ALL-IN-ONE' COMPUTER PROTYPE, WITH ORIGINAL SHIPPING BOX. Codenamed 'Project X,' Apple began development of the Apple Paladin in 1995. Much like the Apple Newton MessagePad (see lot 6), the all-in-one computer, fax, scanner, and telephone device demonstrates Apple's vision at the time of streamlining technology by bringing multiple functions to one device. While never commercially available, the Paladin is a prime example of the innovative spirit at Apple to create machines that best serve people's everyday lives. Because Project X was eventually abandoned and the Paladin never came to market, very few examples of the protypes survive. The only two verified examples traced during this cataloguing are held by the Computer History Museum (CHM) of Mountain View, California (catalogue numbers 102696797 and 102807378 respectively), making this just one of a few known examples and the first to come to a major public auction. The model number of the present example matches that of CHM catalogue number 102696797, and its original shipping box identifies it as a 'PALADIN-1, EN.' It is likely that this was an early working prototype used in the design development as sections of the light matte grey plastic exterior have been swapped out for a glossier beige colored plastic, including the casing of the pull-out keyboard and the screen faceplate, which also bears the rainbow Apple logo. The telephone handset has also been swapped for a larger one. These changes bring the device more in line with CHM catalogue number 102807378, which, being labeled 'Prototype 2,' is likely a later production model closer to what would have been the finalized version. The button interface on the present example is also more similar to the 'Prototype 2' model, having uncolored 'start' and 'stop' buttons (as opposed to red and green), relabeling the upper rightmost button 'Macintosh,' and leaving off the printed pictorial icons next to the device function buttons. The device was tested and powered on, with the print and scan mechanisms engaging and the monochrome LCD screen illuminating but does not boot an operating system or software. While it is reported that a software called 'Complete Office,' was developed for the Paladin, no examples are known to run it. The fact that this is not a clear plastic prototype (which Apple often used so engineers could examine the internal parts during functional tests, (see lots 2, 4, and 9), further supports that this prototype was used in the design development, not necessitating software or an OS.
