As they did with the Macintosh Portable (see lot 3), Apple set out to delivery desktop level performance in the laptop format with the PowerBook Duo. This time, instead of creating a bulky, oversized laptop with high performance, they created a very small and ultra-portable laptop that could be inserted into a dock to be used on a monitor with improved performance. Apple released the first model of the PowerBook Duo in 1992 and it was even smaller than the PowerBook released earlier. They achieved this by removing many of the ports and reducing the size of the keyboard. Inserting the PowerBook into the Duo Dock provided users with additional functionality. Clear plastic prototype models were used by Apple during engineering and hardware tests of many of their projects. The clear casings allowed developers to examine the internal parts while the device was operating and without the need for disassembly. These clear plastic prototypes are quite desirable to Apple and computer collectors for the aesthetic value as well as their rarity.
