FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED and SIGNED: 'To Jan and Steve, / with best wishes/ Lloyd Sumner / 12 DeC 68.' . American engineer and artist Lloyd Sumner was one of the earliest pioneers to approach computer programming solely through an aesthetic lens. Working at the Computer Science Center at the University of Virginia starting in 1964, Sumner utilized a Burroughs B5500 computer and an extended ALGOL programming language to dictate smooth mathematical curves, fluid contours, and intersecting geometric patterns. 1968 was a watershed year for the artist; his ground-breaking works were exhibited globally, most notably at the historic Cybernetic Serendipity exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London, which brought digital arts to the international stage. Computer Art and Human Response served as Sumner's manifesto, merging technical programming logic with philosophical musings on his collaborative relationship with computers, which he famously characterized as his 'friends.' He heavily commercialized his output under the banner 'Computer Creations,' utilizing the book's direct sales to entirely finance his legendary round-the-world bicycle expedition, which was later captured in his 1978 memoir The Long Ride.
