An Imperial German Model 1871 Artillery Sword in good condition. The Imperial German artillery sword of 1871 generally refers to the Artillerie-Säbel M/1871, a military sidearm adopted by the German Empire after its formation in 1871. It was associated with artillery personnel and was designed primarily as a practical short sword or saber for close combat and ceremonial use. The weapon typically had a curved or slightly curved blade, a protective metal guard, and a grip designed for secure handling. Different German states and military branches used variations in design, markings, and fittings, so examples can differ considerably. After 1871, German military swords and sabers increasingly became important symbols of rank and service as well as functional weapons, and many surviving examples bear regimental, manufacturer, or issue markings that can help identify their origin.
