A carved alabaster group of the Madonna and Child Trapani, 17th century The Virgin wearing a white metal crown (possibly later), with the Christ Child now missing his, with traces of gilt and polychrome decoration on a later oak and velvet mounted moulded base, size not including stand: 10.5cm wide, 6cm deep, 27.5cm high (4in wide, 2in deep, 10 1/2in high) (the stand: 14.5cm wide) Footnotes: Provenance Christie's, Amsterdam, The Decorative Arts Sale, including Fine Paintings, 19-20 June 2012, lot 34A, where acquired The above alabaster group is inspired by the celebrated Madonna of Trapani and was likely made as a souvenir for pilgrims visiting Trapani. Unlike the original, the present group adopts an S-shaped pose, characteristic of the Late Gothic style that came into fashion in the 1430s. The imposing 14th-century Madonna of Trapani, traditionally attributed to Nino Pisano, stands in a more upright, frontal pose. While most versions from Trapani adhere more closely to the original's stance, the present group retains many of its distinctive features, including the arrangement of the drapery and the positioning of the Christ Child.
