An exceptional large Charles II pewter broad-rim charger Worn touch mark of 'WP' and a bell to the reverse of the rim, circa 1640-1670, four small round hallmarks to the front of the rim Owner's wriggle work initials 'R H' to the reverse, with two opposing crests on the front rim, 51cm (20in) diameter Footnotes: These are the crests of Sir Alexander FITTON (1630-1690), sometimes known by his Jacobite title Baron Fitton of Gawsworth, Lord Chancellor of Ireland and his wife the heiress Anne JOLIFFE (1639-1687). Alexander FITTON was born at Gawsworth Old Hall, Cheshire the second son of William FITTON of Awrice or Arwne co. Limerick by his wife Eva TREVOR daughter of Sir Edward TREVOR (1580-1642) of Brynkynallt, Chirk, Denbighshire and Rustrevor co. Down. Alexander was a barrister and Judge in Ireland whose death is recorded in France. There is some considerable controversy with regards to Alexander's inheritance of the FITTON estates at Gawsworth. Anne JOLIFFE (1639-1687) was born in Staffordshire the daughter of Thomas JOLIFFE (1617-1693) of Cofton Hall, Worcestershire by his wife Margaret SKINNER (1619-1647). The blazon of crest 1: on a chapeau gules turned up ermine a pansy proper (Fitton). It is very rare to see the inclusion of a pansy as a charge in heraldry. The blazon of crest 2: a cubit arm erect couped, vested vert, cuffed and the sleeve charged with a pile argent, the hand grasping a sword in bend proper (Joliffe). With thanks to David Moulson M.B.E., BSc for his assistance in cataloguing this lot, and Roger Whitworth for his identification of the crests.
