A set of four late George II/ early George III pewter plain rim plates Circa 1740-1790, worn touch marks to the back with crowned X and London labels Each with engraved arms to the rim, leading to a plain centre, 25cm (9 1/2in) diameter (4) Footnotes: These are the arms of John BRISCOE Esq (died 1790) later of Goudurst, Kent and his wife Hannah WIGHTWICK (died 1793). In 1740 they were married at Canterbury Cathedral when John is recorded as being of Cheapside, London and Hannah of Marden, Kent. Very little is known about either family. In 1790 John BRISCOE left a will, which gained probate at the PCC, in which he identifies himself as of Goudhurst, Kent and his only son John as the main benefactor. Notably John Junior was born Cheapside. The BRISCOE arms were originally held by the family of Crofton Hall, Cumberland and later Sussex and the WIGHTWICK arms by the family of Coventry. The blazon: argent, three greyhounds courant in pale sable (Briscoe) - impaling - sable, on a chevron argent between three pheons with points downwards or, as many crosses pattee gules (Wightwick). With thanks to David Moulson M.B.E., BSc for his assistance in cataloguing this lot, and Roger Whitworth for the identification of the arms.
