Title: Victorian Sterling Silver Vesta Case, Birmingham, Engraved Throughout With A Blank Cartouche.
Description: A small hinged vesta (match) case in sterling silver, densely hand-engraved on both faces and the lid with scrolling foliage and flowers. 
The front has a plain circular reserve, left unengraved and ready for a monogram or initials. 
A small suspension ring is fitted at one side, and the base has a reeded striking edge.
Hallmarks are struck along the inner rim: maker’s mark JW, lion passant, Birmingham anchor, a date letter, and a sovereign’s head duty mark. The duty mark is consistent with a Victorian piece made before 1890. An accompanying note identifies it as Birmingham, 1889, by Joseph Whitten, sterling (.925), weight 24 g.
Condition is good for its age. The engraving remains crisp, the hinge and ring are present, and the lid opens and closes. The blank cartouche shows light surface scratches and general wear; no monogram.
A neat, fully hallmarked Victorian match case, attractive as found or ready to personalise.
