A Red Stoneware Teapot and Cover, c. 1755, probably Staffordshire, attributed to Thomas Whieldon, of so-called 'Indian Boy' type, press-molded octagonal shape showing six paneled sides, two larger with a boy centering large leaves and vines, each flanked by women posing within scrolled frames, leaf molded spout and S-scrolled serpent handle, ht. 3 1/2 in. Footnotes: This model has been attributed to Thomas Whieldon and shards of similar types were found on the Whieldon site. Other related shards have been recovered on other sites in Staffordshire, however, and so a firm attribution is difficult. A very similar example is illustrated by Diana Edwards & Rodney Hampson, English Dry-Bodied Stoneware, 1998, fig.7. See also David Barker and Pat Halfpenny, Unearthing Staffordshire, 1990, p.58, no.39 for a related teapot with a rabbit finial to the cover.
