A George III silver lidded tankard Edward Fernell, London 1793 Slightly tapering cylindrical form, the hinged cover with chairback style open-work thumbpiece and scroll handle, the body with two reeded bands, engraved to the front 'pro More, et Monte 21st May 1793' within an oval reserve, height 15.5cm, weight 25oz. Footnotes: The Latin inscription 'Pro More et Monte' translates directly to 'For Custom and the Mount.' It was famously used as an official motto during Eton Montem, an ancient triennial festival at Eton College that dates from 1561 until its abolition in 1847. During the festival, students marched in an elaborate procession to a nearby hill known as the Montem Mound (Salt Hill) in Slough. The goal was to collect money, traditionally called 'salt,' from passersby to fund the university expenses of the school's captain.
