Details:
William H. Seward autographed handwritten letter, one page, 5 x 8", dated Auburn, November 21, 1860. Seward writes to Hubert P. Mann of Jersey City, New Jersey, "I cheerfully comply with your courteous request, and remain very truly yours," followed by his full signature, "William H. Seward."
Written only weeks after Abraham Lincoln's election as President, the letter dates from a pivotal moment in Seward's political career. Seward had been a leading contender for the Republican presidential nomination earlier that year and would soon be selected by Lincoln to serve as Secretary of State.
Good condition with original folds, overall toning and soiling, scattered spotting, and expected handling wear.
William Henry Seward (1801-1872) was an American statesman who served as Governor of New York, United States Senator, and Secretary of State under Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. One of the most prominent antislavery politicians of the antebellum era, Seward was a leading contender for the Republican presidential nomination in 1860 before becoming one of Lincoln's most important Cabinet members. As Secretary of State throughout the Civil War, he played a central role in managing foreign relations and preventing European recognition of the Confederacy. He remained in office after Lincoln's assassination and is perhaps best remembered for negotiating the 1867 purchase of Alaska from Russia, initially derided by critics as "Seward's Folly."
