Details:
George Bryan autographed lower portion of a manuscript legal document dated October 13, 1787, in Pennsylvania. Acting in his judicial capacity, Bryan certifies that Nicholas Diehl personally appeared before him, acknowledged the accompanying deed poll as his act and deed, and requested that it be recorded. Bryan boldly signs "Geo. Bryan" beneath the certification. The document also bears the autograph of Nicholas Diehl and additional contemporary signatures and manuscript on the verso.
The document measures approximately 8 x 6.75". Good to fine condition with expected age toning, original folds, areas of fold separation, edge wear, and handling wear. An old tape reinforcement extends across a horizontal fold on the verso.
George Bryan (1731-1791) was an Irish-born Pennsylvania merchant, Revolutionary War patriot, jurist, statesman, and prominent early opponent of slavery. An active supporter of American independence, Bryan served on Pennsylvania's Council of Safety during the Revolution and became Vice-President of Pennsylvania's Supreme Executive Council in 1777. Following the death of President Thomas Wharton Jr. in 1778, Bryan served as acting President of Pennsylvania. He later served as a judge of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
Bryan was also one of the most important early American political advocates for abolition. He strongly supported Pennsylvania's Act for the Gradual Abolition of Slavery, enacted in 1780, a landmark measure that made Pennsylvania the first state to adopt a gradual abolition law. His career combined leadership during the American Revolution with an important role in the early legislative movement against slavery in the United States.
