Details:
Gerald R. Ford autographed typed letter (TLS), dated November 13, 1979, on his personal letterhead bearing the Presidential Seal and addressed to collector Ken Browne of Phoenix, Arizona. Ford thanks Browne for sending him a copy of a 1960 letter from Nelson Rockefeller and reflects on Rockefeller's later service as his Vice President.
Ford writes, "Nelson's letter was most interesting. I understand his attitude then but also his response to a call to duty in August, 1974. He was an outstanding Vice President, and I was most grateful." Ford had nominated Rockefeller for the vice presidency following his own elevation to the presidency after Richard Nixon's resignation in August 1974. Boldly signed "Jerry Ford" at the conclusion.
Accompanied by the original Rancho Mirage, California mailing envelope addressed to Browne, bearing a facsimile "Gerald R. Ford" signature at upper right.
Fine condition with expected light age toning and a horizontal mailing fold. The accompanying envelope exhibits light handling and postal wear.
Gerald R. Ford (1913–2006) was the 38th President of the United States, serving from 1974 to 1977. A longtime Congressman from Michigan and House Minority Leader, Ford was appointed Vice President following the resignation of Spiro Agnew and became President upon Richard Nixon's resignation during the Watergate scandal. He subsequently nominated Nelson A. Rockefeller as Vice President, making Ford and Rockefeller the only presidential and vice-presidential team in American history in which neither member had been elected to the office they then held.
