Details:
Richard Varick autographed handwritten manuscript letter from the Revolutionary War era concerning military transportation and the movement of baggage by sled. Varick writes, "In Compliance with Your Orders," explaining that he had issued orders concerning the necessary sleds, but that many had already been discharged and returned home. He notes that Mr. Winn informed him they were expected back the following morning and that he had notified Captain Dorsey to have them ready.
Varick asks whether any of the sleds are to travel as far as Montreal and how many of the orders should be issued, further noting that he understands the officers' baggage will proceed farther. The reverse contains an additional contemporary communication concerning the transportation arrangements, stating that the General had directed that the sleds necessary to carry the baggage were to be engaged to travel as far as Montreal. Period docketing and accounting notations are also present.
The document measures approximately 8.5 x 5 inches. Fine condition with expected age toning, original folds, edge wear and losses, a small central hole, and remnants of old mounting material.
Richard Varick (1753–1831) was an American Revolutionary War officer, attorney, and statesman who served as an aide and secretary to several prominent Continental Army commanders. He served under Generals Philip Schuyler and Benedict Arnold and later became General George Washington's recording secretary, overseeing the transcription and organization of Washington's wartime papers. Following the Revolution, Varick served as Recorder of New York City, Speaker of the New York State Assembly, and Mayor of New York City from 1789 to 1801.
