Louis Dembitz Brandeis (1856–1941) was an American attorney and jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1916 to 1939. Nominated by President Woodrow Wilson, Brandeis became the first Jewish justice appointed to the nation's highest court, following a contentious confirmation process that reflected the political and religious prejudices of the era.
Before joining the Supreme Court, Brandeis established a distinguished legal career in Boston, Massachusetts, becoming a prominent advocate for progressive reform, consumer protection, workers' rights, and the regulation of powerful corporations. His efforts on behalf of the public interest earned him the nickname "The People's Lawyer."
Brandeis was also an important pioneer in the development of modern privacy law. His influential 1890 Harvard Law Review article, "The Right to Privacy," coauthored with Samuel D. Warren, helped establish the intellectual foundations of the American legal right to privacy.
During his 23 years on the Supreme Court, Brandeis became celebrated for his opinions concerning freedom of speech, civil liberties, privacy, and the appropriate limits of governmental authority. His concurring opinion in Whitney v. California (1927) remains one of the most influential defenses of freedom of expression in American constitutional history.
A leading figure in American legal thought, Brandeis helped shape the modern understanding of individual liberties and constitutional protections. Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, was named in his honor.
