William Jones autographed handwritten letter (ALS), dated August 4, 1814, from Providence, Rhode Island, addressed to James Monroe, then serving as United States Secretary of State. Written during the War of 1812, the letter concerns a proposed amendment to the United States Constitution and its consideration by the Rhode Island legislature. Signed "Wm. Jones" at the conclusion.
Jones writes:
"I now do myself the honor of observing that the communication concerning the proposed amendment to the Constitution of the U. States was acknowledged & in due course laid before the Legislature of this State, but that no order has been taken thereon."
The reverse bears the original address panel in Jones's hand, directed to "Hon'ble James Munro, Sect'y of State, Washington," along with a Providence postal cancellation dated August 8 and a red "FREE" postal marking.
An interesting example of early American political correspondence between a sitting state governor and the future fifth President of the United States, documenting the constitutional amendment process during the War of 1812.
The letter measures approximately 7.75 x 9.75 inches. Fine condition with expected age toning, original mailing folds, and light handling wear.
William Jones (1753–1822) was an American politician, Revolutionary War veteran, and Federalist who served as the eighth Governor of Rhode Island from 1811 to 1817. During the American Revolution, Jones served in the Continental Army and participated in the struggle for American independence. His governorship coincided with the War of 1812, a period of considerable political division between Federalists and Democratic-Republicans over the nation's military and foreign policies. Jones remained an influential figure in Rhode Island politics during the early decades of the American republic.
