Wade Hampton III (1818-1902) was a South Carolina planter, Confederate cavalry commander, and political figure. One of the wealthiest slaveholders in the South before the Civil War, Hampton personally organized and largely equipped the Hampton Legion at the outbreak of the conflict. He fought at First Manassas, the Peninsula Campaign, Antietam, and Gettysburg, rising through the ranks to major general. Following the death of J.E.B. Stuart in 1864, Hampton assumed command of the cavalry corps of the Army of Northern Virginia and was promoted to lieutenant general in February 1865. After the war, he returned to political life, serving as Governor of South Carolina from 1877 to 1879 and as a United States Senator from 1879 to 1891.
