David Hackett Souter (born 1939) is an American attorney and jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1990 to 2009. Appointed by President George H. W. Bush to succeed Justice William J. Brennan Jr., Souter previously served on the New Hampshire Supreme Court and briefly on the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.
During his 19 years on the Supreme Court, Souter became known for his careful judicial reasoning and his independent approach to constitutional interpretation. Although appointed by a Republican president, he frequently joined the Court's more liberal justices in cases involving individual liberties, civil rights, and constitutional protections.
Souter was one of the three justices who jointly authored the controlling opinion in Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992), which reaffirmed the central holding of Roe v. Wade at the time. He also joined the majority in Lawrence v. Texas (2003), which struck down laws criminalizing consensual same-sex sexual activity, and authored a dissenting opinion in Bush v. Gore (2000), the controversial decision that effectively resolved the 2000 presidential election.
Known for his private lifestyle and preference for life in rural New Hampshire, Souter retired from the Supreme Court in 2009 and was succeeded by Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
