Harold Hitz Burton (1888–1964) was an American attorney, politician, and jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1945 to 1958. Appointed by President Harry S. Truman, Burton previously served as Mayor of Cleveland, Ohio, from 1936 to 1940 and as a United States Senator from Ohio from 1941 to 1945.
During his tenure on the Supreme Court, Burton participated in numerous landmark constitutional decisions involving civil rights, labor relations, and federal authority. He was among the nine justices who unanimously decided Brown v. Board of Education (1954), the historic ruling that declared racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional.
Burton also joined the majority in Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. v. Sawyer (1952), which ruled that President Truman had exceeded his constitutional authority by ordering the seizure of the nation's steel mills during the Korean War. He retired from the Supreme Court in 1958 and was succeeded by Justice Potter Stewart.
