Details:
Edith Bolling Wilson autographed handwritten letter (ALS), two pages written on both sides of a single folded sheet of her 2340 S Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. stationery, dated October 15, 1951. Addressed to "Dear Cousin Jan" and signed at the conclusion "Cousin Edith."
Writing on her birthday, Wilson expresses her gratitude for an orchid and accompanying note, stating that the gesture "brought tears to my eyes." She asks that thanks be conveyed to the recipient's husband for remembering her birthday and writes that the thought "in memory of Mr. Wilson" was particularly meaningful. The warm personal letter continues with affectionate remarks to her cousin and a hope that they might see one another sometime in the future.
Fine condition with expected light handling and age toning.
Edith Bolling Wilson (1872-1961) served as First Lady of the United States from 1915 to 1921 as the second wife of President Woodrow Wilson. Following the president's severe stroke in October 1919, she controlled access to him and screened matters requiring his attention, a historically significant and controversial role she later described as her "stewardship." After Woodrow Wilson's death in 1924, she remained active in Washington society and devoted considerable effort to preserving his legacy.
