Details:
Isaac Toucey autographed handwritten letter signed (ALS), dated July 25, 1829, from Hartford, Connecticut, measuring approximately 8 x 5 inches. Addressed to "R. Lawley Esq." in Washington, Toucey acknowledges receiving his correspondent's letter requesting his opinion and responds with a brief legal discussion. He writes that he "entertain[s] no doubt" regarding the subject at hand, references "the statute against blasphemy," and directs the recipient to "2 Hurst's Digest" for a precedent that he believes to be similar. He closes, "Your truly," and signs in full.
The letter represents an early example of Toucey's legal correspondence, written while he was an established Connecticut attorney and years before his appointment to the presidential cabinet. Its discussion of legal precedent offers a glimpse into his professional practice during the formative years of his public career.
Very good condition overall with expected mailing folds, light age toning, scattered handling wear, and minor edge wear.
Isaac Toucey (1796-1869) was an American lawyer, politician, and statesman who served as Governor of Connecticut, a U.S. Representative, U.S. Senator, Attorney General of Connecticut, Secretary of the Treasury, and Secretary of the Navy under President James Buchanan. He was one of the most prominent Democratic political figures in Connecticut during the mid-nineteenth century and played an important role in federal government during the years immediately preceding the Civil War.
