Details:
Cyrus W. Field handwritten letter signed (LS), dated December 16, 1868, from New York, addressed to Henry C. Carey in Philadelphia. Written in a secretarial hand and personally signed "Cyrus W. Field" in bold ink at the conclusion.
Field writes to Carey expressing regret that he had been unable to visit him the previous evening and discusses correspondence involving a mutual acquaintance.
He writes, in part:
"I regret that I did not have time to call to see you last evening."
Field continues by explaining that he is returning a telegram and letter received from Mr. Clendening and that he has spoken with the gentleman, who intends to visit Carey while traveling to Baltimore the following week.
The recipient, Henry Charles Carey (1793–1879), was a prominent American economist, publisher, and influential advocate of protective tariffs. One of the leading economic thinkers of his generation, Carey was closely associated with the development of the American School of economics.
Written just two years after the successful completion of the permanent transatlantic telegraph cable in 1866, the letter is particularly interesting for its reference to telegraphic correspondence. Field's efforts to establish reliable telegraphic communication between North America and Europe had transformed international business, diplomacy, and journalism.
The letter measures approximately 5 x 8 inches. Near fine condition.
Cyrus West Field (1819–1892) was an American businessman and financier best remembered for his central role in establishing the first successful permanent transatlantic telegraph cable. Beginning in the 1850s, Field organized investors, secured governmental support, and coordinated the ambitious effort to connect North America and Europe by underwater telegraph. An initial cable was completed in 1858 but failed after only a few weeks of operation. Following years of technical difficulties, financial setbacks, and unsuccessful attempts, Field's persistence culminated in the successful laying of a durable transatlantic cable in 1866 aboard the SS Great Eastern. The achievement revolutionized global communications, allowing messages that had previously taken weeks to cross the Atlantic to be transmitted in minutes. In recognition of his accomplishments, Congress authorized a gold medal in his honor in 1867, which was subsequently presented in 1869.
