Details:
Printed indenture documenting a mortgage and land transaction in York Town, Pennsylvania, dated June 25, 1788. The document records a mortgage securing a debt of £2,000 between William Bailey and Thomas Hartley and David Grier, conveying a lot of ground in York Town and describing the property's dimensions, adjoining lots, and associated buildings, rights, and appurtenances. The indenture bears the signature of William Bailey with its original wax seal, along with contemporary witnessing and recording endorsements on the face. Measuring approximately 17 x 13".
Good condition for its age with expected folds, scattered toning, staining, edge wear, and a few small losses and separations along the fold lines. The original wax seal remains partially intact.
Indentures such as this served as the primary legal instruments for recording mortgages, land conveyances, and property rights in eighteenth-century America. Executed just five years after the end of the Revolutionary War, this example documents an early Pennsylvania real estate transaction in York, an important commercial and governmental center during the colonial and early federal periods.
