Details:
George Clinton autographed document signed (DS), dated October 2, 1786, appointing Jacob Petry as a captain in the New York State Militia. The partly printed military commission is boldly signed "Geo. Clinton" by Clinton as Governor of New York, with an additional signature of a state official at the conclusion.
The document appoints Petry as "Captain of a Company in the Regiment of Militia in the County of Montgomery," under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Henry Staring.
Issued just three years after the conclusion of the American Revolutionary War, the commission reflects the continued organization of New York's state militia during the early years of American independence, before the adoption of the United States Constitution.
The document is dated at New York City in the eleventh year of American independence and bears an additional notation recording its passage through the Secretary's Office on April 21, 1787.
An attractive early American military commission bearing the signature of New York's first governor, a prominent Revolutionary War leader who would later become Vice President of the United States.
The document measures approximately 12.5 x 8.75 inches. Very good condition with original folds, scattered foxing, age toning, staining, and minor edge wear. A circular stain from the original seal is visible at the upper left, with heavier discoloration in this area.
George Clinton (1739–1812) was an American Revolutionary War general, statesman, and the first Governor of New York, serving from 1777 to 1795 and again from 1801 to 1804. A staunch defender of states' rights, Clinton opposed ratification of the United States Constitution over concerns about centralized federal power. He subsequently served as the fourth Vice President of the United States under Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison from 1805 until his death in 1812, becoming one of only two vice presidents to serve under two different presidents.
