Stephen Johnson Field (1816–1899) was an American jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1863 to 1897. Appointed by President Abraham Lincoln, Field's tenure of more than 34 years made him the longest-serving Supreme Court Justice at the time of his retirement.
Before joining the Supreme Court, Field played an important role in California's early legal and political history. Arriving in California during the Gold Rush, he practiced law in Marysville and served in the California State Assembly before being elected to the California Supreme Court in 1857. He subsequently served as Chief Justice of California from 1859 to 1863.
During his tenure on the United States Supreme Court, Field became an influential figure in the development of American constitutional law, particularly in matters involving property rights, economic liberty, and the Fourteenth Amendment. He authored the Court's unanimous opinion in Yick Wo v. Hopkins (1886), a landmark decision holding that discriminatory enforcement of a facially neutral law violated the Equal Protection Clause.
Field was also the brother of Cyrus West Field, the American financier responsible for the successful completion of the transatlantic telegraph cable, and David Dudley Field II, the prominent attorney and legal reformer.
His judicial career spanned the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the nation's transformation into a major industrial power during the late 19th century.
