Tom C. Clark (1899–1977) was an American attorney and jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1949 to 1967. Appointed by President Harry S. Truman, Clark previously served as Attorney General of the United States from 1945 to 1949. During his 18 years on the Supreme Court, he participated in numerous landmark constitutional decisions involving civil rights, criminal procedure, and federal authority.
Clark was among the nine justices who unanimously decided Brown v. Board of Education (1954), declaring racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional. He also authored the majority opinion in Mapp v. Ohio (1961), a landmark Fourth Amendment decision establishing that evidence obtained through unconstitutional searches and seizures generally could not be admitted in state criminal prosecutions.
Clark retired from the Supreme Court in 1967 following the appointment of his son, Ramsey Clark, as United States Attorney General under President Lyndon B. Johnson. He remains the only Supreme Court justice whose son also served as Attorney General of the United States.
