Details:
Lee Harvey Oswald autographed handwritten letter (ALS), dated November 23, 1961, written on behalf of his wife, Marina Oswald, to his mother, Marguerite Oswald, while the couple was living in the Soviet Union.
The letter, entirely in Oswald's handwriting, thanks his mother for sending Marina a wool stole and expresses appreciation for her thoughtfulness. Oswald has written and signed the letter in Marina's name, adding a personal postscript signed "Lee xx."
The letter reads, in part:
"Today we received your grand gift, I am very surprised that you guessed my taste in color and fabric. Here it is already very cold so your wool stole will be very useful."
Later, Oswald writes on Marina's behalf:
"I have never seen you (except on a photograhp) but I have a lot of affection for you allready."
At the conclusion, Oswald adds the revealing postscript:
"(I wrote it for her but the words are hers) Lee xx."
The letter was entered into evidence as Warren Commission Exhibit No. 185 during the official investigation into President John F. Kennedy's assassination. The original exhibit identification label, marked "Commission No. 185," remains affixed at the top.
A historically significant piece of correspondence written almost exactly two years before Kennedy's assassination, offering a personal glimpse into Oswald's family relationships and his life in the Soviet Union.
Originally from the collection of Dr. John K. Lattimer, the first nongovernmental medical specialist granted access to examine certain medical evidence relating to the Kennedy assassination.
The letter measures approximately 5.5 x 8 inches. Fine condition with light age toning and minor handling wear. The document is preserved in protective soft lamination, consistent with its use as an official Warren Commission exhibit.
Lee Harvey Oswald (1939–1963) was a former U.S. Marine who defected to the Soviet Union in 1959 before returning to the United States in 1962 with his wife, Marina. He was identified by the Warren Commission as the assassin of President John F. Kennedy, who was shot in Dallas, Texas, on November 22, 1963. Oswald was himself fatally shot by nightclub owner Jack Ruby two days later, while in police custody.
