Details:
Frederick Haldimand autographed manuscript document (DS), dated December 17, 1766, at New York. A clipped portion of a larger military document certifying the service to his Majesty as a "Soldier during the late war, i the late 4th Batt'n Roy'l Americans."
An interesting early military document signed by Haldimand during his service in British North America, referencing the Royal American Regiment, a British Army formation raised during the French and Indian War that later became the 60th Regiment of Foot.
The manuscript measures approximately 7.5 x 2.5 inches and has been professionally tipped into a larger sheet. Very good condition with expected age toning, original folds, scattered staining and spotting, and light handling wear.
Frederick Haldimand (1718–1791) was a Swiss-born British Army officer and colonial administrator who played a significant role in British military affairs in North America during the French and Indian War and American Revolution. He served with the Royal American Regiment and held important military commands in the American colonies before becoming Governor of the Province of Quebec in 1778. During the American Revolution, Haldimand oversaw the defense of British Canada, maintained relations with Native American allies, and directed military and intelligence operations along the northern frontier. He remained governor until 1784 and was instrumental in organizing the settlement of Loyalist refugees following the war.
