Details:
Charles Lee autographed handwritten legal document from Frederick County Court in 1789 concerning a dispute between John Thornton and Thomas Smith over the transportation and sale of tobacco. The pleading states that Smith had agreed to carry two hogsheads of Thornton's tobacco by wagon to Alexandria and sell them in exchange for four pounds lawful money of Virginia. It alleges that although Thornton delivered the tobacco and fulfilled his part of the agreement, Smith failed to sell it as instructed, resulting in the tobacco being lost and damages claimed at £70.
Lee has signed the document at the conclusion, "Charles Lee." Period legal docketing and additional manuscript notations appear on the reverse.
Very good condition with overall age toning, horizontal and vertical folds, scattered staining, and edge wear with several small tears and losses.
