Samuel J. Tilden (1814-1886), Governor of New York, was the Democratic nominee in the highly contested presidential election of 1876 against Rutherford B. Hayes. Although Tilden won the national popular vote and initially appeared to hold an Electoral College majority, disputed electoral votes led to the creation of a special commission, which ultimately awarded the presidency to Hayes by a single electoral vote. The election remains one of the most controversial in American political history.
