Ted Williams (1918–2002) was an American professional baseball player widely regarded as one of the greatest hitters in the history of the sport. The longtime Boston Red Sox left fielder was a 19-time All-Star, two-time American League MVP, six-time batting champion, and two-time Triple Crown winner. Williams finished his career with a .344 batting average and 521 home runs and remains the last Major League player to bat over .400 in a season, hitting .406 in 1941. His baseball career was twice interrupted by military service as a Marine Corps aviator during World War II and the Korean War. Williams was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966.
