The reverse bears period docketing identifying the document as a settlement between Gross and Peabody dated January 16, 1805.
The document measures approximately 8 x 3". Very good condition with expected age toning, original folds, scattered light staining and foxing, and minor edge and handling wear.
Nathaniel Peabody (1741–1823) was an American physician, Revolutionary War officer, and statesman from New Hampshire. An early supporter of the Revolutionary cause, he participated in the December 1774 raid on Fort William and Mary and subsequently resigned his militia commission because it had originated under the royal government. Peabody served in New Hampshire's revolutionary assembly and Committee of Safety and was appointed Adjutant General of the state militia in 1777. In 1779, he was selected to replace Declaration of Independence signer Josiah Bartlett as a New Hampshire delegate to the Continental Congress, serving through the 1780 session. Peabody later chaired the committee responsible for drafting New Hampshire's state constitution and served in both houses of the state legislature during the early years of the republic.
