Thomas Mayne Reid (1818–1883) was an Irish-born novelist and adventure writer whose works enjoyed enormous popularity throughout the 19th century. After immigrating to the United States, Reid worked as a journalist and served as an officer in the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War, where he was wounded at the Battle of Chapultepec in 1847. Drawing upon his experiences in America and his fascination with frontier life, Reid became internationally known for adventure novels including The Rifle Rangers (1850), The Scalp Hunters (1851), The Headless Horseman (1865), and The White Chief (1855).
