Details:
Jethro Sumner autographed 7.5 x 6" State of North Carolina legal document (DS), dated July 28, 1783. Issued in Warren County, the manuscript writ directs the county sheriff to recover a judgment from William Rowland, including sums for debt and court costs, and to return the monies at the next court session in Warrenton. Sumner has signed at the conclusion, "Jethro Sumner."
The reverse contains extensive period docketing, calculations, case notations, and additional manuscript endorsements related to the execution of the writ.
Good condition with substantial age toning and staining, old folds, scattered ink smudging, edge wear, small tears and losses, and general handling wear consistent with an eighteenth-century working court document.
Jethro Sumner (1733–1785) was an American Revolutionary War officer and brigadier general in the Continental Army. A veteran of the French and Indian War, he became colonel of the 3rd North Carolina Regiment in 1776 and was promoted to brigadier general in 1779. Sumner commanded North Carolina Continental forces during the later Southern campaigns of the Revolution and fought at the Battle of Eutaw Springs in 1781. After the war, he became the first president of the North Carolina Society of the Cincinnati.
