Details:
Nathaniel Wales, Shubael Abbe, and John Lawrence autographed Revolutionary War-era pay order, dated May 1, 1783, at Windham, Connecticut. The manuscript was issued pursuant to a resolve of the Connecticut General Assembly authorizing payment to Josiah Morris of Groton for his travel and attendance as a witness at a General Court Martial held at Groton.
The order directs payment to M. Josiah Morris of seven shillings and two pence for his attendance and instructs that the amount be charged to the State. It is signed by Nathaniel Wales and Shubael Abbe as members of Connecticut's Committee of the Pay Table and by John Lawrence as State Treasurer.
Dated just months before the signing of the Treaty of Paris formally ended the American Revolutionary War, the document is an interesting surviving record of Connecticut's administration of military expenses during the closing period of the Revolution.
Fine condition with expected age toning, original folds, and light handling wear.
Nathaniel Wales (1727–1790), Shubael Abbe (1739–1804), and John Lawrence (1719–1802) were Connecticut public officials active during the Revolutionary era. Wales and Abbe served on the state's Committee of the Pay Table, which handled and authorized expenditures associated with Connecticut's wartime government and military obligations. Lawrence served for many years as Treasurer of Connecticut and was responsible for overseeing the state's finances during the American Revolution.
