Commissioned a colonel of the 8th Pennsylvania Regiment, Brodhead participated in the defense of Philadelphia and served under George Washington before being assigned to the western frontier. In 1779, he succeeded Lachlan McIntosh as commander of the Continental Army's Western Department, headquartered at Fort Pitt. Brodhead led a major expedition into the upper Allegheny Valley against British-allied Native American communities and worked to defend the Pennsylvania and Virginia frontiers from attack. He was promoted to Brigadier General in 1779 and remained an important Continental commander in the West during the later years of the Revolution. After the war, Brodhead continued in public service and later served as Surveyor General of Pennsylvania.
