Details:
Walter Satterlee autographed handwritten letter (ALS), written from 148 East 18th Street, New York, and signed at the conclusion, “Walter Satterlee.” The letter is addressed to Fred. C. Steele, Esq.
In the letter, Satterlee responds to an inquiry concerning a photograph of a clay portrait or model. He explains that he is unaware of any photograph of the work, writing, “I do not know of any photograph of clay Img. - I have not one in my family.” He then offers practical alternatives, noting that a copy could be made from an oil painting owned by his brother for $100, or from a watercolor version for $35, describing the latter as measuring approximately 10 x 12 inches.
Satterlee concludes by asking to be informed if either option proves suitable, closing with his best wishes and signature. The letter provides an interesting glimpse into the reproduction and sale of artwork during the late nineteenth century, as well as Satterlee’s efforts to assist a correspondent seeking an image of one of his works.
Near fine condition.
Walter Shirlaw Satterlee (1844-1908) was an American painter associated with the generation of artists that helped establish a distinctly American school of art in the late nineteenth century. Born in Brooklyn, he studied extensively in Europe before returning to the United States, where he became known for his portraits, genre scenes, and decorative works. Satterlee exhibited at major institutions including the National Academy of Design and was a member of several prominent artistic organizations. His work is represented in numerous museum collections and reflects the influence of both European academic training and American artistic traditions.
