Details:
George Croghan and William Trent autographs on a manuscript fragment removed from a larger document. The approximately 8 x 2" slip bears the bold autographs "Geo: Croghan" and "Wm. Trent," together with the signatures of Mary Trent and Samuel [surname unclear]. Two remnants of red wax seals remain at the right edge, indicating the fragment was likely removed from a larger legal or financial document.
The fragment measures approximately 8 x 2". Good to fine condition with expected age toning, irregular edges from removal from the original document, scattered soiling and wear, and losses to the original wax seals.
George Croghan (c. 1718–1782) was an Irish-born colonial trader, land speculator, and one of the most important British Indian agents on the eighteenth-century American frontier. Closely associated with Sir William Johnson, Croghan served as Deputy Superintendent of Indian Affairs and played a significant diplomatic role in relations between the British colonies and Native American nations. His career encompassed the French and Indian War, Pontiac's War, and the turbulent years preceding the American Revolution. Through his extensive travels, trading interests, negotiations, and land ventures, Croghan became a prominent figure in the contest for control of the Ohio Country and the development of Britain's western frontier.
William Trent (1715–1787) was a colonial merchant, soldier, frontier trader, and Indian agent closely associated with the early history of western Pennsylvania and the Ohio Country. During the French and Indian War era, Trent was involved in British efforts to establish a fortified presence at the Forks of the Ohio, the strategic location that later became Pittsburgh. His company began construction of a British fort there in 1754 before being forced to surrender the position to a larger French force, which subsequently constructed Fort Duquesne. Trent later continued his involvement in frontier trade, diplomacy, and land speculation and became an important figure in the colonial history of Pennsylvania and the Ohio Valley.
