Five United States Supreme Court Justices autographed First Day Cover (FDC), commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Charles Evans Hughes, former Chief Justice of the United States. The cover bears the four-cent Charles Evans Hughes commemorative postage stamp, canceled April 11, 1962, in Washington, D.C., on its first day of issue.
The cover features the original autographs of five United States Supreme Court Justices, signed in blue, black, and gray ink:
Earl Warren (1891–1974) – Chief Justice, 1953–1969. Appointed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Warren presided over one of the most influential periods in Supreme Court history. His Court issued landmark decisions including Brown v. Board of Education (1954), Gideon v. Wainwright (1963), and Miranda v. Arizona (1966).
Stanley F. Reed (1884–1980) – Associate Justice, 1938–1957. Appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Reed served on the Court for nearly two decades and participated in numerous important constitutional decisions, including the unanimous ruling in Brown v. Board of Education.
Charles E. Whittaker (1901–1973) – Associate Justice, 1957–1962. Appointed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Whittaker succeeded Stanley Reed and served during a significant period of constitutional debate concerning civil rights and federal authority.
Abe Fortas (1910–1982) – Associate Justice, 1965–1969. Appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson, Fortas was a prominent Washington attorney who successfully argued Gideon v. Wainwright (1963) before joining the Court.
Tom C. Clark (1899–1977) – Associate Justice, 1949–1967. Appointed by President Harry S. Truman, Clark previously served as United States Attorney General and participated in landmark decisions concerning civil rights and criminal procedure.
The colorful Fluegel cachet features an illustrated portrait of Charles Evans Hughes, commemorating his distinguished career as Governor of New York, United States Secretary of State, and Chief Justice of the United States.
An attractive collection of five Supreme Court autographs, all associated with the Warren Court (1953–1969).
Although all five justices served under Chief Justice Earl Warren, they did not serve together simultaneously. Stanley Reed retired in February 1957 and was succeeded by Charles Whittaker, while Abe Fortas joined the Court in 1965.
Fine condition with light age toning and minor handling wear.
